2012 U.S. Open Results: Clijsters Retires, Isner And Sharapova Win On Day 3

Accomplished women’s tennis player Kim Clijsters finished her career in a 7-6, 7-6 loss to England’s Laura Robson on Wednesday at the 2012 U.S. Open. The three-time U.S. Open champion is set to retire.

Also in women’s singles, three-seed Maria Sharapova posted a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Lourdes Domínguez Lino in just under an hour. Sharapova will face American Mallory Burdette in the third round.

In men’s singles, American John Isner took down Xavier Malisse 6-3, 7-6, 5-7, and 7-6 in his first-round match, while Juan Martin del Potro defeated Florent Serra in straight sets (6-4, 7-6, 6-4). Elsewhere in the men’s bracket, Olympic-gold-medal-winner Andy Murray defeated Croatia’s Ivan Dodig 6-2, 6-1, 6-3. He will face the winner of a match between two Spaniards, Feliciano Lopez and Pablo Andujar, in the third round.

Serena and Venus Williams got started in women’s doubles, beating Lindsay Lee-Waters and Megan Moulton-Levy 6-4, 6-0 in their first round match.
